Integrated Primary Care and Behavioral Health Services Training-2017

During my internship with CSWEI I received 2 hours of integrated care training to prepare us to work with our nurses and other clinical staff. I learned that North Carolina is the leading state to integrate medical care and behavioral health to work as a team. What this means is that a mental health professional,  such as a LCSW will be on staff at a medical facility. The LCSW will be called in by the nurse to do a screener for depression or other screener on the patient to assess if the patient needs some counseling sessions. The goal is to reach the patients before the depression or other possible mental disorder reaches a chronic state. The training also taught me that she teaches the doctors that illness coincide with mental illnesses, such as diabetes and depression.

I liked learning; Whole person care:

  • Biological

  • Psychological

  • Cognitive

  • Social

  • Interpersonal

  • Developmental

  • Spiritual

  • Culture or other contextual factors

Fetal Alcohol Syndrome Disorder Training-2018

I received a 3 hour fetal alcohol syndrome disorder (FASD) training during my internship at Triad Behavioral Resources through my supervisor, Mat Sandifer. Mat Sandifer is the Regional Vice President of The Addiction Professionals Of North Carolina.I learned that fetal alcohol syndrome disorder is now looked at on a spectrum because it depends on what parts of the brain are affected. What this means is that it can depend on when or what part of time the mother drinks alcohol during her pregnancy because that is when the certain parts of the central nervous system and brain are forming. Drinking alcohol can also affect how other part of the body forms too; hence why some of the children looking different, but not all fetal alcohol syndrome children and adults look this way. I was not aware of this.

One area of the world where most of these children come from are Russia because this is a common vodka drinking culture. Their culture is accepting of drinking while pregnant and not educated about the effects of alcohol consumption while being pregnant. As American LCSWs we must be aware of this becasue the trainer said we could be misdiagnosing with ADHD instead of looking into the Bio-psycho-social-environmental. The trainer used an example of it taking up to 5 years before getting a proper diagnosis and ADHD was just one of many diagnoses.

Main takeaway intellectual disabilities:

  • low IQ

  • poor reasoning and judgment skills

Narcan Training-October 2018

I learned how to rub the chest first to check for a response; roll the person to the side and insert the narcan in the nose and spray. I also learned to be prepared for the person to be in shock and confused because they are immediately thrown into detox from opioids.
